Άλαν Τούρινγκ: σπάζοντας το Αίνιγμα
“Sometimes, it is the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine”. Καμία άλλη φράση δεν θα μπορούσε να περιγράψει καλύτερα τον άνθρωπο αυτόν, για τον οποίον τόσο λίγα είναι γνωστά, ακόμα και σήμερα. Έζησε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ζωής του στο Λονδίνο, επιβίωσε τον Β΄ παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, έγινε αφανής ήρωας και στοχοποιήθηκε από την μεταπολεμική βρετανική κυβέρνηση λόγω του σεξουαλικού του προσανατολισμού. Κι αν πρέπει να συνοψίσουμε την συνεισφορά του μέσα σε μερικές προτάσεις, μπορούμε να θυμηθούμε πως η αποκωδικοποίηση του Enigma συντόμευσε την διάρκεια του Β΄ παγκοσμίου πολέμου κατά δύο έτη, σύμφωνα με εκτιμήσεις ιστορικών. Το έργο του, πάντως, στάθηκε πυλώνας στην δημιουργία του κλάδου της πληροφορικής, ανοίγοντας τον δρόμο προς την μελέτη των «συσκευών Τούρινγκ». Αυτών που σήμερα ονομάζουμε «υπολογιστές».
